URBAN DECAY 'BORN TO RUN' PALETTE

23 September 2018

If you scroll back in time through some of my previous posts, I'm sure you can tell I'm a huge fan of Urban Decay. The idea behind their new 'Born to Run' palette is that it's the only palette you will need, and that where ever you are going and whatever you are doing, this palette has you covered. Pretty bold statement, so let's put the 21 shades to the test.

Before we begin, is this palette named after the Springsteen classic?

First of all, let's take a second for the packaging. A million miles from the look of the Naked and Vice palettes, the entire outside is covered in beautiful imagery, that reminds me of one of these travel Instagram accounts that follows you then un-follows you the next day.

The palette feels really solid, and has a magnetic fastening. I tried picking up the palette using just the lid and it doesn't even think about opening unless you also hold the bottom. At £40, I wouldn't be casually throwing this in a suitcase, but I would feel confident safely tucking it my hand luggage.  We also have a mirror that fills the entire lid of the palette, which is large enough to do a full face of make up in if you had nothing else available. So, far, so good for a travel themed palette.

Let's talk about the colours.

Born to Run contains 21 shades, which are a combination of matte shades and metallic/shimmer shades. All swatches are from left to right of the rows of the palette, and have one image with and one without flash.

Top row (From left to right):
Breakaway, Stranded, Blaze, Weekender, Still Shot, Riff, Good as Gone

Middle row (from left to right):
Hell Ride, Baja, Accelerate, Guilt Trip, Ignite, Smog, Wanderlust

Bottom row (from left to right)
Wildheart, Punk, Double Life, Jet, Drift, Radio, Big Sky

I'm really REALLY impressed with some of these colours. They are all pigmented - not a single matte was chalky, and the shimmers all pop. I really got excited swatching Jet, as it's a real treat to find a really deep black in a palette. It does look for have a tiny shimmer to it rather than being a true matte, but this will help it sit with the rest of the palette a bit better I feel. Some of the orange shades are really on trend for 2018/19 too, and I'm visualising a lot of Christmas and New Year looks with that bottom row. Breakaway, the lightest shade in the palette is the only one I felt needed layering a bit to really get the colour showing, but I also feel that is partly due to how light it actually is, along with the fact that is actually a shimmer shade that looks matte in the pan. Personally, I would have preferred this matte, as not everyone wants a shimmer highlight or base shade.

My only other suggestion colour wise would perhaps be one more cool tone matte mid-brown. Still Shot, Baja and Riff are stunning, but blend out very warm, and wouldn't work as a transition shade for some looks. That is me being petty, however, as there are endless combinations of eye looks you could create where ever you may be or may be going.

My only other comment on this palette is so far I've only used it to swatch, but it's looking a little messy already. Double Life in particular is throwing up all kinds of trouble. It's no where near the ABH scandal level but if you're looking at a long term travelling palette, this could get a bit annoying, especially if they start to crack when you hit pan. It would also have been nice to get one of the double ended brushes that normally come with the big palettes like this, but let's blame Brexit despite it being an American brand.

Is this the only palette you need to do your make-up anywhere? Well, if you're looking to travel light, then this is a strong option. It would have been nice to have the brush and the matte version of Breakaway, but it's not the end of the world. You could create a huge range of looks with this palette, and it has almost every possibility covered.

At £40, this isn't cheap, and although the colours are beautiful, some really won't be for everyone. If you're new to make-up, or looking to get value for money, I'd perhaps stick this on the wish list rather than the payday shopping list, as I think there are a whole host of palettes that are cheaper and more versatile. For someone who is more into make-up and confident with colour, I think this palette is a great investment, and a great addition to any collection/kit!
